Heritage Roof Chimney Flashing

Chimneys are notorious for leaking and often culprit is metal sheet flashings. Flashings for chimney consist of 4 main sections

  • Front apron
  • Side flashings
  • Box gutter
  • Cover flashing

Lead flashings  on residential and commercial heritage roofs will last over 80 – 100 years. It is always important to engage a licensed and quality trained lead worker to replace, repair or carry out new lead installation works. Once new lead is installed it adds value to your property and is a lifetime investment.

Chimney flashing

When a chimney is located at the ridge, the back gutter is replaced by a saddle at each side. Depending on material used be it tiles or slates, side flashing can always be installed with soakers or as cover or step flashings.

Chimney flashing can be installed or fabricated using lead welding or bossing method. However, usually CODE 4 is the minimum requirement to use. Further is bossing method is preferred than CODE 5 is considered to use.

Unfortunately, many people decide on cheap quick fix on roof using unlicensed roofers were lack of workmanship is evident, in return costing households even double the amount to fix or repair roofs.

Handy tips:

  1. To avoid moisture build up issues caused by flashing it is advisable to get a thorough annual chimney inspection annually to prevent further damage to the roof.
  2. Avoid engaging inexperienced or unlicensed handymen/ roofers working on your roof to further cause roof damage and allowing use of silicone for temporarily fix only.
